Harvey M. "Red" Steuerwald, Jr., 85, of Tucker St. in Lenox, died Monday September 16, 2013 at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. He was born in Hudson, NY on July 6, 1928 the son of Harvey M. and Marion Pulver Steuerwald. He moved to Lenox as a child where he was educated in the Lenox Schools and was a 1946 graduate of Lenox High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during WW II from 1946 until 1948 aboard the USS Bristol DD 857 . He worked as a carpenter and painter for Raymond Parsons Contractors from 1948 until 1951 and then as a carpenter for T.P. Fielding and Son Contractors from 1951 until 1969. From 1969 until 1976 he worked as carpenter and supervisor for several large construction firms. In 1976 he started his own contracting business called H.M. Steuerwald Inc. which he operated until 1995 at which time he began a caretaking business which he operated until retiring in 2006. He has been a member of the Lenox Fire Company from 1960 and was past president of Carpenters Locals of Lenox and then Pittsfield. He served the Town of Lenox as a Water Commissioner, served on the Elder Housing Board and was an Academy Building Trustee. His wife the former Margaret "Marge" Decker whom he married September 1, 1951 died March 21, 2012. He leaves his son Michael F. Steuerwald and his wife Larraine of Lenox, his daughter Sharon Shook and husband Donald of Pahrump, Nevada; four grandchildren Rebecca Steuerwald, Amanda Shepard and her husband, Jason, Brian Steuerwald and his wife, Brittney Anne, and Peggy Steuerwald and Alex; Two great grandsons Owen Shepard and Kyler Juillerat. He also leaves his cousin, Dot Hover, of Spencertown, NY. Besides his parents and his wife, he was predeceased by a sister and brother-in-law, Anita and Robert Dolan, a brother and sister-in-law, Walter and Marion Decker DeFreest, a brother and sister-in-law Louis and Erma Decker and niece, Karen Dolan Caron. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held Monday morning September 23, 2013 at 10am at St. Ann's Church in Lenox with the Rev. Christopher J. Waitekus, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Ann's Cemetery. There will be no visiting hours.
