Albert L. Melle, Jr, 77, of Lenox, died unexpectedly on February 21, 2022 at Yale New England Hospital in New London, Connecticut.

He was born in Lenox on March 30, 1944, the son of Albert Melle, Sr. and Mary (Romeo) Melle. He was educated in Lenox schools.  He served in the Army from 1967 to 1971. He worked as a painter and vinyl hanger throughout Berkshire County.  He formed and operated a painting and paper contracting business with David Coffey during the 1980s.  Most of his painting career was done at BMC.  Later, he and David joined the staff at BMC in the Engineering Department.  He retired from BMC in March 2008.  

He married Julianne (Mulligan) Melle July 2, 1978.  They celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary last July.  They spent many years living in New Lebanon, NY.  Upon Al’s retirement they purchased a second home near the beach in Westerly, RI. Subsequently they purchased a condo in Lenox, MA.

Throughout their marriage Al and Julie were avid antique collectors. You would frequently find them at auctions, tag sales, flea markets, and antique shows.

He is survived by his wife, Julie, his sister Theresa Terry Michney (Mitch), his niece Christine Sotek (Jeff) and great nieces Alex and Jordan. He was predeceased by his nephew James E. Terry III.  He also leaves Jim’s wife Holly Terry and his great niece Mya. In addition, he leaves his brothers and sisters-in-law: Lee and Maureen (Mulligan) Hammel, John and Patricia Mulligan, Brian and Marisa Mulligan, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.  

Services for Al will be on Tuesday, March 1st at 11AM at the Kelly Funeral Home, 3 Main St., Lee, MA. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery, Housatonic Street, Lenox, MA.  The family requests that masks be worn.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lenox Fire Department Oscar Hutchinson Scholarship Fund in memory of the late James E. Terry III in care of the Kelly Funeral Home, 3 Main St, Lee, MA 01238.
