Our beloved matriarch, Ann, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2023. Daughter of Archibald and Esther (Oberlander) Bangs, she was born at home on May 17, 1926 in Becket, MA. She was one of four children and had a close relationship with her siblings, Francis (Jaouen), Fred (Bangs - predeceased) and Etsie (Phillips).
Ann graduated from Lee High School in 1944, where she excelled in academics, was active in school politics and played basketball.
Ann married her husband of 56 years, the late, William J. Wheeler (Bill) in 1950. They began their family shortly thereafter and purchased a cottage on Otis Reservoir in East Otis, where the most special memories were made by Ann and her family for the next 65 years. After retiring, Ann and Bill spent their winters at Harbor Isles in North Port, FL, where they thrived and where Ann continued to spend her winters until 2019.
Ann leaves behind four devoted children, W. Mark (Kathi), Matthew, Janice, and David (Sally). In her final years, Ann was able to age with dignity due in large part to the attentive and loving care which was provided to her by both Matt and Jan.
She was proud to tell anyone she met about her eight grandchildren, Trisha (predeceased), Jessica, Christie, Nicole, Marissa, DJ, Kelly and Bobby, as well as ten great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren. The love and pride she felt for her entire family was palpable.
Ann will be remembered for her humor, unconditional love and appreciation for a cold glass of Pinot Grigio.
All are welcome to attend a funeral service to honor her at St. Mary’s of the Lakes Mission in Otis, MA on Thursday, January 12, 2023 at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, we kindly ask that you consider a donation to Perkins School for the Blind, which provides talking books and equipment to those with low vision, which was a lifeline for Ann later in life.
