John T. Hughes, passed away peacefully at his home, Saturday, July 23, 2022.
John was born in Pittsfield, MA on December 3, 1932, son of Angelina and Francis Hughes. He was a graduate of St. Joseph High School, after High School he entered the Army and served in Japan during the Korean War. He worked on the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority for over 35 years until his retirement in 1994. He was a member of Knights of Columbus, VFW, and the American Legion, he was also a founding member of Lee Ambulance and a volunteer member of the Lee Fire Company. He was a communicant of St Mary’s Church.
John loved spending time with family members, taking daily rides with his sons and great grandchildren, on these rides they would stop and get ice cream. He was an avid sports fan, enjoyed playing and watching golf and watching old movies. Under the rough exterior he sincerely loved his family and friends who became family.
He is survived by his five sons and their families: Christopher Hughes (Doreen), Francis Hughes, Patrick Hughes (Sofia), Andrew Hughes (Shannon), Matthew Hughes (Stephanie), grandchildren and great grandchildren, Lynne (Jeremy) Penelope and Henry Wells, Lily and Jamie Hughes, Donna Lee, Thomas (Samantha) Rainnah, Connor James, Hazel Lynn, Charlotte, Andrew Hughes, Tristan Hager, many nieces and nephews and loving family member Maryanne Fanning.
He is predeceased by his wife Rosemary B. Hughes (7/20/2003), whom he married September 5, 1959 and his daughter Sheila Hughes (2/16/2021).
A Liturgy of Christian Burial for John Hughes will be held Friday, July 29, 2022, 10:30AM at St. Mary’s Church in Lee. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held Thursday evening from 4-6PM at the Kelly Funeral Home in Lee.
