John “Jack” White, Jr., 78, died Tuesday afternoon at Lee Health Care with his family by his side.
Jack was born April 12, 1943 in Bridgeport, CT, the son of John J. White, Sr. and Anna Mae Chapman White.
Jack graduated from St. Mary’s Grammar School and from Notre Dame Catholic High School of Bridgeport, Class of 1961. He was an outstanding athlete, especially baseball and continued to play while serving in the United States Air Force where he served from 1961 to 1965. While in the service, he attended military language school at Syracuse University which he used to translate Russian airplane communications while he was stationed in the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. After the service he worked at Hayden Machine Shop in Springfield, MA and later retired from Mead Paper Company in South Lee. He then did part time work as a delivery driver for the former McClelland Drug Store in Lee. He enjoyed yard work and gardening, he was a member of the Corvette Club in Pittsfield and was a fan of all sports.
On May 12, 1967, Jack married the former Jane Hendry, from Scotland, and together they have lived in Becket, MA since the late 1970’s.
Besides his wife, Jane of 54 years, Jack is survived by his sister: Margaret (Peggy) and her husband Steve of Milford, CT; two brothers Gerald (Jerry) and his wife, Barbara, of San Rafael, CA and Thomas (Tom) and his wife, Lisa of Cheshire, CT; his niece: Meredith Clark and her husband, Mike; his grand-nephews James and Thomas Clark and many cousins.
A Funeral service for Jack White will be on Thursday, March 31st, at 4:30 pm at the Kelly Funeral Home in Lee. The family will greet people from 3pm until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Berkshire Humane Society are welcomed and may be mailed to the Kelly Funeral Home, 3 Main St., Lee, MA 01238.
