Julia C. Drummond was born May 31, 1926 in Mount Vernon, NY to Domenick and Laura Cardillo. Her parents moved their family from New York to the Berkshires, first to Monterey, where Julie attended local schools and graduated from Searles High School, class of 1945. They then moved to Stockbridge, where she met her husband, Elton A. Drummond Jr. They were married in 1953 and celebrated 64 years together before his passing in 2017.
Julie and Elton settled in Stockbridge, where she spent the next decades raising their four children and managing a large farmhouse which hosted many students from nearby Tanglewood every summer. Summers were also spent in their extensive vegetable and perennial gardens, backyard cookouts, and swimming in Stockbridge Bowl, always joined by family, friends, and a golden retriever.
With the children grown, Julie returned to work, opening a coffee shop in Lee, which she later sold, then obtained her real estate license. Julie enjoyed many years with Reinholt Real Estate before retiring. Both retired, she and Elton returned to spending summer days creating large gardens surrounding their new Lenox home.
In 1998 they moved to California to be closer to children, grandchildren, and perfect weather. They made many new friends in Mission Viejo, where they remained active in gardening clubs and walking their dog along scenic trails. After Elton’s passing, Julie moved to be near family in Arizona, soon making many new friends in her retirement community. She remained active with cooking and entertaining, puzzle solving, and of course, gardening club.
Julie is dearly missed by her family; Susan and Henry Clemente, Lori Drummond, Dan and Ann Drummond, Diane and Stanley Sutkowski; grandchildren Chloe and Alex Gednov, Camden Sutkowski, and Hannah Sutkowski; great-grandson Eryk Gednov; step-grandchildren Andrea, Nicole, Lia, Nina and their families. She also leaves brother and sister-in-law Gerald and Sally Cardillo, brother Frank Cardillo, and many nieces and nephews.
There will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday, May 11, 9:30 -10:20 am, Kelly Funeral Home, 3 Main Street, Lee, MA, followed by graveside service at 10:45 am at St. Peter’s Cemetery, 90 Stockbridge Rd, Great Barrington, MA.
