Lee Hammel Obituary

Lee Hammel of Lenox, 82, passed in the arms of family January 17, 2024 after a brief illness.
Lee was a resident of Lenox for over 50 years. A lifelong “Buckeye” at heart, Lee was born in East Cleveland in 1941, raised by parents Leo and Lyda in Euclid, Ohio, and rooted for the Indians, the Browns and The Ohio State University.
Lee had a passion for music. He studied trumpet at the Cleveland Institute of Music under the principal trumpet with the Cleveland Orchestra and carried that passion to college as a member of The Ohio State University “Best Damn Band in the Land”. He received a B.A. at Indiana University, and an M.A. at the University of Hartford and came to Lenox in 1969 where he resided until his passing. Lee spent parts of five decades “teaching band” in the Lenox Public Schools, the Richmond Consolidated School, Pittsfield High School, Chatham Central School, and in Bayville, New York. Lee also served as a member of the Lenox Planning board and volunteer at the Berkshire Scenic Railway Museum (as a conductor, train engineer, board member and president).
A husband, father and grandfather, Lee met the love of his life and wife, Maureen (Mulligan) in Chatham, New York; they married in West Stockbridge in 1968. Lee was survived briefly by Maureen. Lee was a hopeless “child at heart” and practiced the joys of flying elaborate kites, shooting fireworks, and “running” electric trains. Lee will be missed deeply by his daughter Adrienne (Towson, MD), his son Ian and daughter in law Christine (Wellesley, MA), his grandchildren Caroline, Maria, Lillian, William, John and Andrew, 2 nieces, 4 nephews, their spouses, and by extended family, friends, former students, and former colleagues near and far.
Informal calling hours are Sunday, January 28, 2024 from 3 – 5 P.M. at the St. Ann’s Church Parish Center, 134 Main St., Lenox. Funeral services will be held Monday January 29, 2024 at 10 A.M. at St. Ann’s Church, 134 Main Street, Lenox, followed by burial at the Mountain View Cemetery on Housatonic St.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lee’s memory to the Berkshire Scenic Railway Museum, Inc. in care of the Kelly Funeral Home, 3 Main St., Lee, MA 01238.
