Mary Pompi Obituary

It is with immense sadness that the family of Mary Margaret Vecchia Pompi (Marge) announce that she has passed away.  Marge passed away on June 3, 2025 leaving behind a grief-stricken immediate family.  Marge fought a courageous 3 month battle with cancer.  Marge was born on December 7, 1938 to Michael and Cecelia Ballardini Vecchia in Pittsfield, MA.  Marge spoke often of her Nona who raised her and who was a huge influence and guidance in her life.  Marge was educated in the Lee, MA school system and was a graduate of Lee High School class of 1956.

Marge worked for GE in Pittsfield, MA until the job of raising her family started.  Marge married the love of her life, John Pompi, on June 14, 1958.  They raised their five children in Lee and instilled in each of their children that a college education was non-negotiable and essential in life.  From 1979 to 1992  Marge had at least 1 child, often 2 and sometimes 3 children in college at the same time.  Marge was the ultimate protector of her family.  Her children always knew someone had their back at all times.  Marge was a fierce protector of them.

Marge was a true believer in God and of Faith.  Marge volunteered for Saint Mary’s Church from the 1970’s thru 2020 starting when Father McCormick came to Saint Mary’s.  Marge, also, loved to read.  Marge would read at least three books per week of all genres.  One guilty pleasure of Marge’s was reading anything written by Danielle Steel.  Cooking delicious Italian meals including homemade meatballs, pasta, gnocchi, secret recipe spaghetti sauce and Italian cookies are just a few of the meals that kept our family together on Sundays, holidays, anniversaries and birthdays.  Marge and John enjoyed escaping the cold Berkshire winters over the past decade with their new friends in Englewood, FL.  Marge was a member of the Sons of Italy Club.

Aside from her husband John Pompi Sr., Marge leaves her five children: John Pompi Jr. and wife Debora; Christopher Pompi and wife Jill; Carla Pompi-Lussier and husband Christopher; Anthony Pompi-Moraes and husband Evan; and Andrew Pompi and wife Holly;  Grandchildren: Morgan Pompi, Samantha Pompi, Rachel Bruning, Zachary Bruning, Daniel Pompi, Natalie Pompi, Nicholas Pompi, Matthew Lussier, Nina Lussier, Quincey Sobczyk, Wesley Sobczyk  and several great grandchildren.  Marge found her greatest joy in being a mother to her children, and she absolutely loved being a grandmother more than anything in the world.

Marge leaves many other relatives and friends including a brother M. Thomas Vecchia, many in-laws, nieces and nephews.  Marge was predeceased by grandson Thomas Pompi, her parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, many in-laws, nieces, nephews and some very dear friends.

A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Mary “Marge” Pompi will be held on Thursday, June 12th  at 11:00 at St. Mary’s Church in Lee, with burial to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, in care of the Kelly Funeral Home, 3 Main Street, Lee, MA.
