Richard Birkett Obituary

Richard H. Birkett passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 12th at his home in Becket, MA at the age of 86. He fought a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease for over a decade with his loving wife Eva by his side.

Richard was born on April 19, 1936 in North Adams, MA to Richard E. Birkett and Georgia C. Hoyt. Richard moved from the Hope Farm in Williamstown, MA to Tyringham, MA as a toddler. He grew up in Tyringham and on the Howard Farm where he made lifelong friends. Richard graduated from Williams High School in 1954. 

In 1954, Richard joined the Air Force and served his country for four years at home and abroad. 

Richard spent nearly the next 50 years working construction and then retired from the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 98, in 2000. His retirement entailed long, fun-filled hours at the Lee Sportsmen's Club socializing, shooting skeet, and reading historical nonfiction.

Richard leaves behind his wife Eva (Sohl) of nearly 55 years, his daughters Shari Mullen of Burlington, VT, Jennifer Wilson (Justin) of Batesville, TX and Tara Birkett-Field (John) of Sandisfield, MA. Richard also leaves grandchildren and great grandchildren: John, Shannon, Mitchell, Cole, John, Desiree, Grady, Lachlan, Madeleine, and Roman. Richard leaves his twin siblings Diane Butler of Lincolnton, N.C. and Donald (Arlene) Birkett of Cinderford, Great Britain, Martha Joyner (Al) of Lenox, M.A., and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of services, the family asks that you remember Richard (Dick/Dickie) for his indomitable spirit, unparalleled work ethic, devotion to family, and raucous sense of humor.
