Richard Huhtanen Obituary

With great sadness, we announce the passing of Richard Harold Huhtanen—fondly known as “Hoot.” He was a beloved father, “Pop,” and grandfather who departed surrounded by his family at age 87 on March 22nd at Baystate Hospital in Springfield, MA.

Born January 2, 1939, Richard was the only child of Heimo and Olive Huhtanen, formerly of West Springfield, MA. He treasured summers spent at his grandfather George Clellan Turner’s farm in Becket, MA, where he developed a lifelong enthusiasm for tractors and vintage cars. At 23, he founded “Hoots Auto Sales” in West Springfield, Massachusetts. These early experiences gave him a strong work ethic that carried through his automotive career and influenced his outlook on life.

Flying brought Richard immense happiness. As a private pilot for many years, he accumulated countless hours in the cockpit and owned several planes, with the Mooney being his favorite. He loved sharing his passion for aviation with his children and grandchildren—whether joining the Sunday morning “Agawam Flyers Club” at Bowles Airport in Agawam or later at Barnes Municipal Airport in Westfield, taking day trips to Block Island with his daughter and her family, or enjoying memorable journeys to the Oshkosh, WI air show with his son.

Richard leaves behind his son Todd R. Huhtanen and partner Jeanne Brzycki, his daughter Holly J. (Huhtanen) Clark and her husband Justin L. Clark, and his cherished grandchildren: Kelly Huhtanen, Tyler Huhtanen, and Ethan Clark. He is also remembered by his former spouse of forty years and friend, Joan (Fontaine) Huhtanen, along with many other relatives and friends.

According to Richard's wishes, he will be quietly laid to rest at Becket Center Cemetery, close to his dear grandparents and the Finnish family heritage he valued deeply. The family will hold a private graveside service to honor his life and legacy.

Richard requested no flowers. To commemorate his memory, the family encourages donations either to your favorite charity or to the First Congregational Church at 22 YMCA Rd, Becket, MA 01223 (GoWithGod@ypbecket.org).
